Clinical Skills and Simulation

About

In SNMHS we use simulation and clinical skills training to support and enhance the development of basic and more advanced technical and non technical skills at all levels for nurses and midwives.

Simulation Based Education (SBE) and clinical skills promotes advanced inquiry, problem solving and decision making leading to a deeper conceptual understanding which allows students to practice in a safe environment. Experiential learning, deliberate practice and the ability to provide feedback are the primary advantages of SBE.

We use manikins, task trainers, simulated patients (actors) and student role play in our teaching. Our manikin are full body simulators ranging from low fidelity to high fidelity. They come in a variety of types including babies, children, and adults. Task trainers provide students with the opportunity to practice and improve motor skills performance.

Simulated patients and student role play is used to practice the development of critical non-technical skills such as team work, communication and behavioural skills that underpin safe clinical practice. The teaching, learning and assessment of SBE and clinical skills is a critical component of nursing and midwifery education.
