The Professional Certficate in Collective Leadership is a new programme that will be available from January 2020. It is one of a number of programmes offered by the UCD IRIS Centre for Interdisciplinary, Research, Innovation & Education in Health Systems.
It is a 10-ECTS-credit, QQI Level 9 interdisciplinary programme.
The programme comprises one 10-ECTS-credit module:
Trimester 2 (Jan to May):
The module contributes to the MSc in Leadership, Innovation and Management for Healthcare that can be completed by successfully completing a further 80 ECTS credits of study, either by means of eight 10-ECTS-credit taught modules or a combination of taught modules and a dissertation or project. See https://www.nmhs.ucd.ie/msclim for further information.
The module is particularly relevant to team leaders/managers who are interested in improving the performance of their team, whilst developing their own leadership skills.
The module aims to develop in participants an awareness and understanding of the dominant leadership paradigms and models in the literature. It will introduce students to collectivistic leadership approaches and the evidence in support of collective leadership in the healthcare sector, including the benefits at patient, team and organisational level. The module also aims to provide students with an understanding of the complexity of healthcare teams and the factors that influence team performance, as well as an understanding of their own strengths and capability to become collective leaders.
In addition to gaining familiarity with collective leadership concepts and the evidence for the effectiveness of this approach, a student can expect to improve his/her knowledge and skills in leading a team collectively and to develop a greater awareness of the strengths of one’s own team.
The module will prepare participants for team leadership at all levels of the healthcare system.
The module is delivered through 21 hours of classroom teaching, 10 hours online and student transferring learning and obtaining feedback from his/her own team. Students will be introduced to the Collective Leadership and Safety Cultures research programme being conducted by the Health Systems team and will have an opportunity to implement key components of the Collective Leadership material with their own teams and share the learning from this.
Students will be expected to implement 3 team-based one-hour interventions with their chosen team and complete outcome templates and session feedback summary from participants for each of these sessions.
In addition, students will be expected to submit a 2,000 word assignment, reflecting (with reference to relevant literature) on 1) their experience of implementing CL in a team (strengths, limitations, challenges etc); and 2) how they perceive their own leadership as having changed/ developed over the course of the module.
